HBO’s “About Face: Supermodels Then and Now”
Rarely can I say that a documentary, book, article, or TV show about modeling depicts an honest and balanced view of the profession. “About Face: Supermodels Then and Now,” which aired last night on HBO, does this and more. Director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders leads us in a fascinating history lesson of modeling and fashion culture from the 1940s on, with modeling icons and editors sharing their poignant, funny and frank stories and refreshing insights on the industry, beauty, aging, plastic surgery, self-esteem… Their smart, thought-provoking quotes had me stopping and rewinding all the way through to make sure I caught every word. More stunning than these supermodels’ faces in their youth is their wisdom now.
I got in on the conversation in a Q & A with Timothy Greenfield-Sanders on HBO.com

I have so much to write about this documentary, that I’ll be doing a series of posts. Stay tuned for more from: Paulina Porizkova, Carmen Dell ‘Orefice, Isabella Rossellini, Jerry Hall, Marisa Berenson, Christy Turlington, Carol Alt, Kim Alexis, Beverly Johnson, Bethann Hardison, Pat Cleveland, China Machado, Christy Brinkley, Lisa Taylor, Cheryl Tiegs, Karen Bjornson, Calvin Klein, and Jade Hobson.
As a stylist and now Editor of an online magazine I have known and worked with many of these women. They are wonderful iconic role models ,I was surprised not to see Lauren Hutton Donna Mitchel and Susan Forristal amongst their ranks. Bravo HBO and thanks to Jill Johnson
I love Isabella Rosselini’s attitude. European women are so much
more relaxed about aging. They’re all really beautiful women
still!
What I find a bit puzzling is the absence of one of the biggest supermodels of the 1970′s – Cristina Ferarre. From covers, campaigns and commercials, her face was just about as popular as Cheryl Tiegs. Why she wasn’t included is preposterous.
I imagine she wasn’t available or willing to do the show.
