Modeling Tip: How Modeling Agencies Will Take Your Measurements
If you measure up height-wise to model standards, i.e. you’re at least 5’9″ or ideally 5’10″ (for women), you’re half way there. But then there are the daunting bust-waist-hip measurements. These, like your height, will go on your comp card (your weight won’t). These also are the measurements that agents may take repeatedly as they can change.
I did not experience the frequent militaristic, scrutinizing measuring routine that is described at times in model horror stories. But, when I was new to an agency and a booker wielded the evil measuring tape, I groaned. My most troublesome measurement was my waist; it was never small. Measure it at the widest part, after lunch, and you could come up with a ridiculously non-modelesque number like 28. Suck in and measure it at the very narrowest part, before lunch, and perhaps the model gods would bestow a generous 26.
The Model Bust
Measuring is easy: the widest part. Ideal: around 34 or 35 inches.
The Model Waist
You can’t count on agents to measure the narrowest part of your waist. Some do, while others measure just above the hip bones—your true waist. Ideal: 24 or 25. Smaller is not a problem. Bigger… well, I got away with it, not counting a couple of complaints during swimwear/workout wear shoots!
The Model Hips
This is where they get ya. Most agencies measure the widest part, not necessarily your hips. If you have narrow hips like I have, they’ll measure around the widest part of your butt/thighs. Ideal: 34 or 35.
So, the ideal is a less curvaceous version of the hour-glass figure: 34-24-34 (vs. a 36-24-36 Marilyn Monroe bod).
Do models and agents ever fudge? Oh yeah. One of my comp cards says 34-25-34. Never. More like 34-27-36, but that never went on my card. You just want to be careful not to fudge too much when you’re sending stats to an agent who may measure you when you meet. Shave off or add an inch here and there? Sure, if it will get you in the door. I call it model math.
My height is 168 cm and weight 56 can i be a model?
Your height (about 5’6″ for those who aren’t used to cm) is below the usual minimum. Here are some posts that might be useful: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/tuesday-tip-pint-size-supermodels-prove-you-dont-have-to-be-five-ten/

Hey i don’t know if you still answer comments but I have a 27 inch waist my hips are 39 inch and my bust is 31 also I’m 5’9 do you think I can still do high fashion??
Hi Stephanie,
The 39″ measurement is the one that will hinder you. If you can shave a couple inches off your hips and waist, you will be fine. Have you entered my model search? You can find details here: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/how-to-enter-the-modeling-mentor-model-search/

Hi! For years I have wanted to become a model. Even though many people have told me that I could be or should look into modelling, I still feel like I won’t be able to be signed by an agency. I think that I’m worried that even if I try my hardest to get into the industry, that I still won’t be able to make it. I think that I am too tall and I need to lose a little bit of weight. But I know that I can loose weight easily, at the moment I just don’t want to appear too thin in front of my family and friends. I am 189 cm tall or 6’2″ and my measurements are 35 – 27 – 35. Do you think that it would be possible for me to become a model. I have dreamt about it for as long as I can remember, and if I am given the opportunity I know that I will work the hardest I possibly can.
Hi Lauren,
Jill
You should enter my Modeling Mentor Model Search! Here are the details: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/how-to-enter-the-modeling-mentor-model-search/

hello, I was just wondering, I’m 13(almost 14) trying to get into the modeling business. I’ve been a photographers assistant for quit a while and I’ve fell in love with the art of photography and modeling. I’m just wondering if I meet standards.
height 5’6
weight 119
bust 25
waist 20
hips 26
Hi Alexa, It’s quite hard to work as a fashion model if you are under 5’9″. You could try commercial modeling acting. Check out these posts: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/category/commercial-modeling/
And there are the exceptions: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/tuesday-tip-pint-size-supermodels-prove-you-dont-have-to-be-five-ten/

i dont want to be model bcoZ i know im short for modeling im 5’4..but i want body like model and want to be beautiful like them
im 32-26-32!! can you give me some advise about it.is it perfect measurement? i Naturally got olive skin and Brunette hair
Hi Ria,
Every body is different so it’s hard to say one measurement is perfect, but it sounds like you have great proportions—a nice mini hourglass figure! Most models work out to stay in shape, so be sure to exercise regularly. Drink LOTS of water—almost all models carry big bottles of water everywhere they go! Eat tons of fresh fruits and veggies, good fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, etc), lean protein, and be careful of carb overload. I don’t overdo it with the beauty regimen, but you can read about some of my favorite skin/haircare and cosmetics here: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/tuesday-tip-must-have-beauty-products/

Also, what about photography? There’s much more longevity and control than in a modeling career. And you are already getting experience at such a young age, which is great!
I’m just shy of 5’8 and weight in at 118 lbs, my measurements are 34-26-34. I feel like the only thing holding me back is my height, but I could also slim up a bit more. Thoughts?
Hi Keara-Sue, Have you entered my model search? Please see details here: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/how-to-enter-the-modeling-mentor-model-search/

I was wondering about something. My thights are 20 inches around the tickest part. Is it to much? my bust is 32 inches not 31 opps.
You should not get too caught up in measurements, but models are usually very tall and thin. Probably the first measurement to consider is height. Are you over 5’9″? Also there are commercial modeling opportunities, which are not so stringent. You can check out these posts: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/category/commercial-modeling/

Hi I’m 18 years old and I’m getting ready to graduate high school and was thinking about getting into modeling but i think I might be too tall. I’m about 6’1 my bust is 33-34 my waist Is 26 and my hips are 35. What are my chances ?
“You’re too tall” is a statement that I have never heard about a female model (funny enough, men are more likely to be rejected for being too tall). Long and lanky always wins, especially on the runway.

I hear 21 is the end of most modeling careers? I’m 21 but a 34-25-32…and weigh like 105 pounds. I’m only 5’7 though…I would have liked to be a model but I feel like it’s too late. I’m happy with the way I’m built and don’t want to change to fit a mold…but I still like to dream

I’m 14 and 5’10. I am 32-26-36. I have been scouted by 2 modelling
agencies and am interested. But I’m pretty shy and self-conscious. I’m not sure I would be confident enough. I also have no idea how to model. Do you think I should try it? Would I get turned down if I was too shy?
Also I’m 121lb
Hi Xela,
First, you should submit some photos to my model search: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/how-to-enter-the-modeling-mentor-model-search/
There certainly are models who are shy, but you have to work on appearing confident and being personable. Clients want to work with models who are interesting and fun to be around. Your looks may get you booked, but your personality may be the difference in whether a client keeps booking you. Most girls need some practice to loosen up and be comfortable on set or on a runway, but you can do some shoots for fun–even with your mom or a friend behind the camera—and start learning how to move. Look at the pics and see which angles are best for your face (read this: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/tuesday-tip-showing-your-best-side/ ). See which body positions look good and which look awkward. Go through fashion magazines and get ideas. Also, as scary as it may sound, acting classes are a fantastic way to gain confidence and poise. It worked for me!
Hi! I am 173cm (5’8″), and my measurements are 33-25-34. Can I be a model? I also want to ask you about Hijab modeling, I saw many pictures about it, so do you have any information about it?

I’m only 5’4 but I really want to try modelling. My height is it too short to become a model? And do you think modelling agencies will accept me?
It is tricky at 5’4″ Are you interested in acting at all? Being short is often an advantage for actors! You can check out these posts on commercial modeling: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/category/commercial-modeling/

I would love to model and am always told that I should but I know that’s not possible. I’m 5’11″ which is perfect but my measurements are 39-34-41 definitely not ideal. But I’m too small to be considered plus size. So aggravating!!!
I’m 14 as well forgot to say that
Have you submitted to my model search? I know that in-between zone can be tricky, but send me pics:

So sorry for the delay in responding, btw. I’m trying to figure out a way to keep up with everyone’s questions!
Hey im 18 im 5’8 and three qaurters do you think modeling agencies will hold the qaurter of an inch against me
My measurements are 34-25-33
No! Round up to 5’9″. Models are not known for exactness in their height measurements
Good luck!
Hi, I’m 14 (look more like 16), and I’m 5’10. My measurements are 32-23.5-36.5. My eyes are blue-grey and I have dark blonde/brownish hair. I would really like to know more about how to be scouted, because I’m completely obsessed with modelling and the fashion industry in general. Also, where do I get good pictures taken?
I’m currently on a fitness program and diet to lose weight and gain a bit of muscle so those measurements may change.

would i need to lose a little more weight? i’m going to nyc soon and i wanted to go do some walk in casting call things for agencies. also do i need a portfolio or no? like do i need to have digitalis printed or what? i don’t leave until the first of june so i may be able to lose a little weight before. i’m about 140 right now but could probably get down to 135 which would shrink some
inches in my waist hopefully. but just let me know if you can! thanks!
So sorry, I’m buried in questions and probably am too late to answer this! You do not need a portfolio. Most agencies want to see snapshots with minimal makeup. Hi, I’m 5’8 and I really want to model. My bust and waist measurements are fine (32-24) but, my hips are too big (37.5). I weigh about 126lbs. Is there any way to slim down my hips to like a 36 or lower?
Some supermodels have gotten away with 37.5″ It’s not a deal killer. Why don’t you submit pics to my model search? You can find info here: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/how-to-enter-the-modeling-mentor-model-search/

Oh wow, I’ve never compared morning to night height measurements! Wearing high heels helps
Some people believe in hanging upside down to stretch out the back. I bet yoga would help too, as it helps with posture. Hang in there (ha!)
Hi, I am 5’8 and my measurements are 32-24-37.5. I want to be a model but my hips seem to be too big for the industry. Could I be a model? Is there any way to get my hip measurements down?

Hi! I’m almost 16 and 5’7. My measurements are approximately 31-27-36. Is it possible for me to have a career in modeling?
Hi Eve, It’s quite difficult to break into modeling if you are under 5’9″. You could pursue some acting training and try to take a more commercial route. Take a look at the posts on commercial modeling on my site: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/category/commercial-modeling/
My daughter is 12.
Measures
Height 5’7 1/2″ (67 1/2″)
Bust: 34
Waist :26 1/2
Hips : 35
Weight :109
She is still growing and has started doing some runway events buy we have no agent and live 30 minutes from NYC. She really wants to pursue this. But for a young lady her measurements are still changing. She just turned 12. I do everything as a mom and I do draw a line at bikini shoots that are not age appropriate ( one piece is fine) as long as she is fine with something and It then I am okay with it. I just don’t allow anything very ski.oy. Once she us 16 o K ow that changes but at 12 there shoukd he some limits. Am I wrong for doing that? It has not been a issue yet. And where would I start to fund an agency? I feel every company I looked up has some report in ripoff. I am so clueless in this industry. I have great photos and she does book when I submit. But I
Are her measurements okay for modeling? I’d she too young to oil for a gent? I thank you for any advice.
Hi Jolene, There is not much work after a kid reaches 5’2″ and before they reach 5’9″ (preferably 5’10″) and age 18. She’s in the dead zone. She could try to get acting experience and go in a more commercial direction. It would be hard to get a top modeling agent at this age. Hope this helps. There’s a lot more info on my blog, so read as much as you can. Best of luck, Jill

I am 14 years old and I am 165cm but I really really really want to be a model. As for the future do u think that my height can become 170cm? And if not, I can’t be a model? No agency can accept me??
Hi Serena, For fashion modeling, height is a big factor, but there are commercial modeling opportunities for more petite women.

Im 13 and I’m 157 cm. I’m short and have an hourglass figure. How will I get an agency to notice me? Will people like the idea of a short, curvy teenager signed with they’re agency? I want to become a model, but I’m not sure where to start.
Also, who should I hire, if I do this at all, to take my pictures? I’m pretty short but I still want to be a model. How can I do this successfully?
Hi Addie, Initially you can just have a friend take snapshots and you can submit those to agencies. Don’t spend money on pictures. Here are some tips on the type of photos agents are looking for: https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/modeling-agency-submissions-5-tips-for-taking-the-photos-agents-want-to-see/
Good luck!

The teen years are tricky. It’s sort of no-man’s land for modeling. Child modeling ends at about 5’2″ and then there is not much until girls hit 18 and are not subject to child labor laws that regulate hours and require tutoring on set etc.
Hi Addie, It is challenging to make it in the modeling biz when you are shorter than the 5’8″ minimum, but these stories might inspire you! https://www.modelingmentor.com/blog/tuesday-tip-pint-size-supermodels-prove-you-dont-have-to-be-five-ten/
Hi, I’m Fay and I would love to be a model. I’ve been told on several occasions to go into modelling but I’m not sure if I’m gonna be signed
Age:14
Height: 5’8
Bust:33
Waist:25
Hips:36
I really hope you reply my comment.
Hi Fay, I hope you have submitted to my model search. Best of luck!
Hey! I’m 13, 5’8 and im still growing. My waist is 25 inches, my hips are 31 inches.
Is that goos for a model? Or should my waist be smaller?
Hi Kristin,
Those are great measurements for a model!
Hi, i’m 5’11, and want to model but my hip measurement is 39inches. I have a small waist and small bust but am wondering if this is going to seriously hinder my success?
Hi, 37″ does tend to be the upper end for hip measurements. 5’11″ is awesome though! You could try a healthy workout and nutrition regimen and see what you can shave off. Good luck!
